Fine Art -Artists at work in the "Heart of Matlacha"

Original Fine Art & Jewelry- Voted Best Art Gallery in Matlacha

Linda Gamlen

I have been fortunate to live in beautiful places most of my life. A few years of wandering the west led me to Taos, NM in 1971, an artists' colony with a creative heartbeat of it's own. I established the first gallery in Taos Ski Valley, where I showed my gold jewelry as well as the work of many newly arrived Taos artists who have since become well known. The mountains and sky and vibrant colors among which I lived influenced my work, as much as the vivid colors and wide sky do here in SW Florida.

I pursued a lengthy career in fine dining, have sold the gallery and devoted myself to motherhood and college tuition. After retirement from the "real" world, I moved back to Taos and opened a design landscaping business, which allowed me free rein to implement colorful, harmonious gardens full of perennial color and native materials.

A friend offered to teach me welding and I soon fell in love with the plasma cutter and welder, fabricating wall hangings and dimensional sculptures in 1/8" steel, largely inspired by the beauty of my surroundings. Thanks to several galleries in Taos, Santa Fe, and Silver City, and the Tesuque Market in Santa Fe, my work found homes in most states and many countries.

In 2010 I re-encountered my eighth grade beau, and the rest, as they say, is history. During our search for the island of our dreams we happened on Pine Island, where we have become devoted permanent residents.

I am entranced by the wildlife and floral abundance of our surroundings and these very things have imbued in me a desire to record what I'm seeing. Terra cotta pots were my first "canvases": it seemed only natural to paint earthly delights on earthen pots. I have since worked with small canvases as well, and enjoy acrylics as the perfect medium for my small works, all of which pay homage to the beautiful place in which we live.
